ในทางพุทธศาสนานั้น การงานทุกอย่างล้วนมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อการฝึกฝนตนเอง อันหมายถึงการฝึกให้มีสติในทุกอิริยาบถ เพื่อใช้สติควบคุมจิตใจไม่ให้สั่นไหวไปตามแรงปะทะ งานศิลปะแบบตะวันออกจึงมิได้เป็นไปเพื่อสนองอัตตาของศิลปิน หากแต่แฝงไว้ด้วยปรัชญาอันล้ำลึกเพื่อน้อมนำผู้สร้างและผู้เสพไปสู่ความเป็นมนุษย์ที่สมบูรณ์มากยิ่งขึ้น นั่นคือ การเป็นมนุษย์ที่มีอัตตาเล็กลง อันเป็นผลมาจากการเจริญสติอย่างต่อเนื่องจนเข้าใจการปรุงแต่งแห่งชีวิต

โดยส่วนตัว คุณชัยพงษ์ กิตตินราดร เป็นผู้ที่มีความละเอียดอ่อนในการใช้ชีวิต ตั้งแต่การกิน การดื่ม การเลือกข้าวของเครื่องใช้ รวมไปถึงการเลือกที่จะให้หรือไม่ให้ค่ากับบางเรื่องที่แตกต่างจากคนส่วนใหญ่ ในระหว่างนั่งรับประทานอาหารค่ำด้วยกันในช่วงเย็นวันหนึ่ง คุณชัยพงษ์เล่าให้ฟังว่า เขากำลังอยู่ในขั้นตอนการนำพาตัวเองออกจากข้อผูกมัดของระบบทุนนิยม ด้วยภาระทางด้านการเงินของครอบครัวเริ่มหมดไป นับจากนี้เขาจึงอยากใช้ชีวิตโดยปราศจากพันธนาการทางเศรษฐกิจ เพื่อสูดกลิ่นไอของเสรีภาพให้เต็มที่

ผมเองไม่เคยรู้ว่าเสรีภาพทางเศรษฐกิจนั้นมีกลิ่นอย่างไร และก็ไม่ค่อยเคยได้ยินคำนี้จากปากใคร เพราะบรรดาผู้ที่มีชื่อเสียง อำนาจ และเงินทองทั้งหลาย ล้วนยังคงพร่ำบ่นถึงการหาเงินอย่างไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด แม้นักธุรกิจที่ถูกจัดอันดับว่ารวยที่สุดในโลกของไทย ก็ยังไม่เคยคิดจะปลดเปลื้องพันธนาการนี้ แถมยังมีทีท่าว่าจะจองจำทั้งสังคมด้วยโซ่ตรวนดังกล่าว ผ่านวาทกรรมที่ได้รับการกล่าวอ้างอย่างกว้างขวางในสื่อมวลชนกระแสหลัก

การได้พบปะ พูดคุย จิบน้ำชา และนั่งดูภาพถ่ายของคุณชัยพงษ์ทีละภาพอย่างช้าๆ จึงเป็นเสรีภาพอันมีค่า ที่คนธรรมดาเช่นผมจะหาได้ ในห้วงยามแห่งการขัดแย้งแบ่งขั้วของสังคมไทยตลอดระยะเวลาหลายเดือนที่ผ่านมา รวมทั้งในห้วงเวลาที่เรากำลังจะต้องเผชิญหน้ากับสงครามทางเศรษฐกิจครั้งใหญ่ ซึ่งจะพันธนาการเราเข้าสู่ระบบทุนนิยมเข้มข้นอย่างยากจะหลุดพ้นหลีกหนี

ท่ามกลางความเปลี่ยนแปลงแห่งปัจจัยภายนอก ภาพถ่ายที่เปรียบเสมือนดวงตาภายในที่คุณชัยพงษ์ใช้มองโลกเหล่านี้ สะท้อนวิถีการสร้างสรรค์แบบตะวันออกออกมาอย่างชัดเจน แม้ภาพส่วนใหญ่จะมีรายละเอียดอันน่าตื่นเต้น แต่เมื่อเพ่งพินิจอย่างยาวนานเพียงพอ เรากลับพบความเย็นซ่อนเร้นอยู่ในความร้อนแรงของการชุมนุมใหญ่ทางการเมือง พบความมลังเมลืองในจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่เริ่มเสื่อมสลาย พบความสงบในระลอกคลื่นพลิ้วไหวบนสายน้ำเจ้าพระยาที่โอบกอดเรือพระราชพิธี ยิ่งเมื่อพิจารณาให้ดี ในดวงตาของเด็กน้อยจากจำปาสัก เราอาจพบความไร้เดียงสาที่หาได้ยากแม้จากนักบวชในอารามศักดิ์สิทธิ์แห่งเมืองหลวง

ทั้งหมดนี้คือองค์ประกอบที่ช่วยขับเน้นให้ภาพถ่ายงดงามขึ้นตามเวลาที่เราเฝ้ามอง

การจะชื่นชมภาพถ่ายของคุณชัยพงษ์ จึงจำเป็นต้องอาศัยดวงตาเท่าๆ กับเวลา เพื่อที่จะดื่มด่ำและดำดิ่งเข้าสู่สิ่งที่คุณชัยพงษ์พยายามถ่ายทอดออกมา ณ ขณะเวลาเมื่อเก็บภาพและลงสี นี่คือเสน่ห์ของภาพถ่ายขาว-ดำลงสีด้วยมือ งานฝีมือที่กำลังจะเลือนหายไปตามวันและเวลา หากทว่ายังคงคุณค่างานศิลปะไว้อย่างครบถ้วน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ศิลปะในมุมมองของตะวันออก ที่เน้นการลดอัตตาและฝึกตน

Foreword

In Buddhism, it is believed that every work is assigned to a man so that he can practice himself – to be aware of each action and to hold his mind steady against any force trying to make it sway. The aim of Eastern art is, thus, not to feed the artist’s ego but rather to subtly bestow profound philosophy on both the creator and the viewer, helping them see that becoming a more complete human means the dwindling of their selves – a consequence of ongoing practice of the mind.

Personally, Mr. Chaipong Kittinaradorn lives a delicate way of life. This includes fundamental aspects as eating and choosing personal objects to a more crucial conviction which is very different from the majority of people. One day while we were having dinner, Mr. Chaipong told me that he was in between the process of freeing himself from the capitalist chain as the financial burden of his family had been lifted up. Thus, from now on, he would like to live his life unbound from the bonds of economy – to finally breathe in the air of freedom.

I have never known what the odour of freedom is like and scarcely heard anyone say these words. Almost all of those with big names who have fame, power and money still talk interminably about how to make more money. Even the businessman who is ranked the richest in Thailand has never considered loosening this chain; on the contrary, it seems that he wants everyone to be tied to these fetters – the agenda affirmed by his own words widely quoted in the mainstream press.

Therefore, meeting, talking and having tea with Mr. Chaipong while gradually looking at his photographs one by one gives me a sense of that precious freedom. It is the only kind of liberties an ordinary man like me can afford in many months when Thai society is fuelled by conflicts and the huge economic crisis is hasting towards us – this time it will tighten the bondage of this inescapable capitalist chain with its full force.

Amidst surrounding changes, photographs as seen through the eyes of Mr. Chaipong’s mind manifestly reflect the Eastern way of creation. Although some photos contain stirring details, if one looks closely long enough, he will find coolness in the midst of the flame blazing during the big political gathering, the glittering beauty in those declining mural paintings and peacefulness in water ripples that surround the royal barges on the Chaophraya River. One will also notice, if he is really attentive, that inside the eyes of those children from Champasak lays innocence that is very hard to find even from priests in sacred temples.

All these elements make those pictures shine more beautifully as time passes by.

In order to appreciate and absorb what Mr. Chaipong tries to portray in his hand-coloured photographs requires both eyes and time. The moments of shooting and the selection of colours together bring about the charm of hand-colouring photography. Although nowadays this creative method is fading away, it still fully captures the values of art, especially in the Eastern sense that aims to diminish the self and make men aware of their own deeds.
